The Marvin Opera House launched in 1893 as a live venue with plays, music, and sporting events. In its live period, luminaries on the stage included Sarah Bernhardt, Douglas Fairbanks, the New York Philharmonic, John Philip Sousa, Booker T. Washington and boxer John L. Sullivan. As road shows began to fade, it was renamed Marvin Theatre and switched exclusively to film. In 1929, it was equipped for sound but a year later - in November of 1930 - the Marvin Block with a hotel and theatre burned down.
