Previous Names: Monroe Theater
The Monroe Theater, pre-dating the Loop theater of the same name by many years, was located on E. 55th Street at S. Kimbark Avenue in the Hyde Park neighborhood. It was built for Julius Birk in 1909, and in 1911 became part of the Alfred Hamburger circuit. The Monroe Theater was still operating by 1919.
It was renamed Harding Theatre in 1922 and was closed in 1929.
The building housed a High-Low grocery store during the 1950’s and into the 1960’s. The former theater, along with most of its neighbors, was demolished in the early-1960’s when the Chicago Park District acquired the land for the construction of Nichols Park.
