Emerald Theater

This theater was already open prior to 1912, as a Moving Picture News article from January 20 of that year mentions the theater’s owner, Ed Rothe, adding a one-story addition to the theater building at a cost of $4000. It stood on S. Halsted Street at W. 78th Street, in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood. The Emerald Theater must have been fairly short-lived, as the theater is not listed in the Chicago Tribune’s movie theater guide after 1913.

By the late-1930’s, a cleaners is listed as being at this address. Today the site is a large vacant parcel across the street from the 6th District Chicago police station.
