Hemet Theatre (I)

Built in 1913 by William Martin, on April 21, 1918, an earthquake badly damaged the first Hemet Theatre and all the other structures in Hemet. The Home Guard was brought in to keep order in Hemet and San Jacinto. The Los Angeles Times reported that all four walls of the Odd Fellows Hall collapsed just after 12 people escaped.

After the earthquake the city passed a law that all rebuilt buildings must be earthquake proof. Motion Picture news reported on November 9, 1918, Mr. Martin was vacationing on Catalina Island while waiting permission to reopen his theater.

In November 1921 Mr. Martin opened the current Hemet Theatre across the street and the first Hemet Theatre closed.
