Whiteway Theatre

The Empire Hall was opened on 31st May 1915. It was designed by Wollongong architects Kiernan & Brown. On 13th February 1922 it was re-named Amusua Theatre following a remodel to the plans of architectural firm Kaberry & Chard. In November 1928 it became the Whiteworth Theatre.

It was operated by Wollongong Theatres Pty. Ltd. from 1936 to 1955. It was closed on 19th April 1965 with “From Russia With Love” and “Valerie”. Taken over by an independent operator, it began screening ‘Continental’ films which later became more risque. Greek language films and Kung Fu films were also part of the progamming when the Whiteway theatre was closed in 1982. The empty building was destroyed by a fire on 10th March 1992, with only the facade remaining. It now fronts a furniture store.
