Majestic Theatre

Her Majesty’s Theatre & Opera House was built and opened in 1885 by the Dundee Theatre & Opera House Company. It staged drama, opera and musical comedy. By 1915 it was screening films as part of the programme and by 1919 it had become a full time cinema. By 1925 it had been re-named Her Majesty’s Picture Theatre. It was closed in October 1929 to be extensively remodelled.

It re-opened as the Majestic Theatre on 1st December 1930. It was operated successfully as a cinema by the J.B. Milne Theatres chain until it was destroyed by fire on 28th August 1941. The site remained in ruins until it was purchased by the J.B. Milne Theatre chain in the mid-1950’s.

He built the Capitol Cinema on the site, which opened on 6th August 1956. It was later renamed ABC (and has its own page on Cinema Treasures).
