Turner Hall opened April 26, 1881. Live plays both in English and German were presented along with public speeches and sporting events. Motion pictures were very popular at the turn of the century. Those screenings were held in the open air in the hot summer months. The films were so popular that Otto W. Mohr opened a moving picture theatre in 1911 within Turner Hall called the Royal Theatre. Not long after the Liberty Theatre opened in 1920, the Royal Theatre’s days were numbered.

Though continuing another three years, the Royal Theatre would not make it to the sound era. Turner Hall returned to live events, mostly dances and dance marathons. In March of 1947, high winds blew out half of its west wall.
