Previous Names: New Lyric Theatre
Houston, Missouri’s first theatre with actual sloping floor was the New Lyric Theatre. It was a converted former post office downtown. Its opening was delayed to a flu epidemic from January 24 to January 30, 1929 with “The Michigan Kid”.
On November 19, 1931, it became the Melba Theatre. The new theatre opened. It closed February 13, 1938 to move to a much improved theatre a block away continuing as the Melba Theatre. The building appears to have burned down in 1999 with the neighboring bank building.
