Star Cinema

Located in Edenderry, County Offaly. The Father Murphy Hall was run initially by William Higgins from the early-1930’s but later by Sean O’Kelly and was known as the Star Cinema. It had 400 seats and a Philips sound system fitted. The proscenium was 14ft wide and there was a portable stage. The cinema also had a dance hall attached. The Hall was damaged by fire in 1945 which seems to have marked the end for films. It was actually the Town Hall that had been renamed and was originally a market house built in 1826 to a design by Thomas Duff. It has also served as a ballroom, museum and courthouse.
