The cinema was designed by Patrick Munden and George Luke O’Connor and built of concrete and brick with a slate-covered steel roof. It opened on 26th February 1923 as the Fountain Picture Palace, and the auditorium consisted of stalls and balcony and was later equipped with a British Acoustic sound system.

The cinema was renamed Lyric Picture House in 1939 following a change of ownership and closed on 23rd June 1962. It was later a carpet warehouse but was demolished in 2002 and replaced with a block of flats.
