Princess Cinema

The Princess Cinema was designed by George Luke O’Connor for the Rathmines Amusement Company and opened for business on 24th March 1913. The auditorium had 500 seats, was decorated with statues of the Muses. Within months of opening it seemingly closed reopening at the end of the year as the New Princess Cinema. It was later equipped with a Western Electric(WE) sound system. Ownership of the cinema changed in the late-1930’s when acquired by the O’Grady family and the house was refurbished. It reverted back to the Princess Cinema name and reopened on 14th January 1939 with 700 seats. It closed on 2nd June 1960 with two somewhat dated films: John Wayne in “Lady from Louisiana” and Robert Hutton in “Tropical Heat Wave”. It was later in use as a joinery and warehouse but was demolished in 1982 and replaced with an office block. Its nickname was “The Prinner”
