Luxor Cinema

In 1913, L. Ekelmans opened the Zaltbommel Bioscope Theater in the Gasthuisstraat in Zaltbommel. Later he christened it into Cinema Minerva. In 1931, W. van Dijk took over the cinema and renamed it Luxor Cinema.

On 30 March 1971, the building on the Gasthuisstraat was designated as a National Monument. The cinema closed its doors on May 11, 1986 and is now in residential use.

Greetje Wille, the manageress had a grandfather, who visited a cinema in Amsterdam. They did not have something like that in Zaltbommel, but a short time later Luxor Cinema opened its doors. During the screening of the film “Dracula” starring Bella Lugosi, an ambulance was prepared as a precautionary measure, in case people would faint.

Greetje Wille passed away this year (2018).
