The $160,000 Starlite Drive-In launched June 6, 1949 with the film “The Time, The Place and The Girl” starring Dennis Morgan. It was the first of many drive-in theatres in Edmonton and its 70-foot high tower was a beacon for night entertainment. It was first operated by the Western Drive-In Theatres Circuit.

By the end of its 22nd season, Famous Players decided to sell the land and build a new twin screen drive-in to replace Starlite Drive-In. It closed on November 12, 1970 with “Patton” and “Bandolero”. It was demolished for the Whitehall Square apartment complex project on June 22, 1971 with Mayor Ivor dent helping in the demolition. In the dismantling of the operation, a wire carrying sound to a neighboring house was found as someone was enjoying free films at the Starlite Drive-In while nesting pigeons were displaced.
