The Johnny G. Long Theatre Circuit launched the Velasco Theatre in Velasco, TX on November 24, 1944 with Jean Heather in “National Barn Dance” as its opening film. The theatre was approved for construction during World War II because of the area’s industrial impact on the War effort especially with the local Dow plant and proximity to the Brazos River. The town of Velasco was annexed by the city of Freeport in 1957.

The long-running Velasco Theatre switched to hard R-rated films and X-rated films in the 1970’s and lasted into the video era. The theatre has since been demolished.
