Sunset Drive-In

The Sunset Drive-In was built by the Crescent Amusement Co. Circuit of Nashville, Tennessee. It launched with the film, “Wyoming” starring John Carrol and Bill Elliott on July 21, 1949, with space for 440 cars. It was located three miles south of Decatur on U.S. Highway 31. The Sunset Drive-In faded on January 18, 1958 with Robert Young in “Half Breed”. Crescent Amusement razed the ozoner replacing it with the Crescent Motel which opened April 28, 1960.

Found It!

I couldn’t get an exact address on Google, but the closest intersection is US-31 and Lenwood Rd SE, Decatur, AL. The drive-in was located about 1/8th of a mile north of the intersection on the west side of the highway.

Today, the property is an empty field with no trace of the drive-in remaining.

A close approximate address on Google Maps is 3417 US-31 Decatur, AL 35603 which is right next to the vacant lot that was the Drive-In.

On historicaerials.com it shows up on the 1952 and 1960 Topo Maps

On the 1966 Topo the drive-in has been replaced by several building. Which you can see in the aerials from 1981-2006 is a motel complex.
