Plug Hat Drive-In

The November 10, 1956 Motion Picture Herald reported that the “Plug Hat Drive-In at Oakley, KS., is equipped for year-round operation”.

The Plug Hat Drive-In’s first appearance in the Motion Picture Almanacs was in the 1960 edition. It was listed with a capacity of 150 cars, owner E. Golden. The Plug Hat Drive-In was only on the MPA list one more year, in 1961.

The Plug Hat Drive-In was also listed in the 1960 Film Daily Year Book.

The October 13, 1960 issue of The Oakley Graphic reported that the Plug Hat Drive-In, Oakley, Kansas, was on the county treasurer’s list for delinquent personal property tax for 1959. It said the Plug Hat Drive-In owed $236.02.

A 1974 USGS aerial shows the remains of a small drive-in at the corner of 2nd Street and US 83. Nothing remains of it today.

Plug Hat is the name of a present-day neighborhood in Oakley. A plug hat is a felt hat that is round and hard with a narrow brim.
