Old Trail Drive-In

The first drive-in theatre to open in Zanesville, OH, was the Old Trail Drive-In. It was built by two veteran men of the theatre, Chester E. Huprich and Roy W. Waller (dba Old Trail Amusement Co.). The first screen was stretched across tall trees and they built their own speakers. The drive-in had a car capacity of 200 cars. In addition to the movies, they also featured a lot of stage shows. The new airer took its name from the highway that it was located on, the National Old Trail, or Route 40. The Old Trail Drive-In opened on September 19, 1947, screening the 1945 adventure/musical “Frontier Girl” with Yvonne De Carlo, Rod Cameron and Andy Devine. On June 4, 1949, they would go and open the Skyway Drive-In Theatre in Zanesville with Huprich being the manager and Waller operating the Old Trail Drive-In. In late-1953, the screen tower at the Old Trail blew down from a windstorm, so after that the remaining theatre equipment was moved to Piketon, Ohio. The Old Trail Drive-In was closed for good. The Old Trail Amusement Co. was dissolved in April of 1960 by Helen L. Huprich.

The current address listed at one time worked at one time with Goggle maps. It does not work…..this will: US-40 & Spry Rd. Zanesville, OH 43701. Zanesville is listed for other addresses in the area and it works for now. To me cross streets work the best at times….this is one of them. This is why I want to start using GPS coordinates along with a numbered street addresses for drive-in theatres. With GPS you can lock into the concession stand/screen tower/parking ramps for exact locations. Since a lot drive-ins were out in country they never had numbered street address. If you don’t know how to use GPS, just cut and paste it into the same box you would write address and search. To get the GPS address on goggle maps just right or left click the location and it will come up.
