Palladium Cinema

Located in the northwest Sheffield district of Walkley at the corner of South Road and Highton Street. The Walkley Palladium was opened on 17th December 1914 with “Brewster’s Millions”. 960-seats were provided in stalls and a circle which had side slips extending to the 21ft wide proscenium. By 1927 it had been re-named Palladium Cinema. On 25th November 1929 it was equipped with a Western Electric(WE) sound system with a screening of “The Rainbow Man” starring Eddie Dowling. In 1931 the cinema was redecorated and the sidewalls of the auditorium had panels painted depicting Lakeland scenes.

The Palladium Cinema began bingo sessions instead of films on Sunday evenings from May 1962. The cinema was closed on 6th October 1962 with James Mason in “Tiara Tahiti” & John Mills in “Goalbreak”.

It has since been demolished and by 2020 an Asda supermarket operates on the site.
