Gruga Halle

Located in the district of Ruttenscheid in the southwest of the city, adjacent to the Botanic Gardens. The Gruga Halle is a multi-purpose indoor area which opened on 25th October 1958. It was operated by the city of Essen. Presenting over the years live concerts, sporting events, movie screenings and political events. Many top named artists have appeared here including: Bill Haley and his Comets, Ella Fitzgerald, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys, Les Zeppelin, The Who, Deep Purple and Pink Floyd.

In 1959, 1962 and 1965 the 3-strip Cinemiracle production “Windjammer, The Voyage of the Christian Radich” was screened. Over 650,000 tickets were sold. The size of the deeply curved screen was 32x17 meters and it was at this time the largest cinema screen in the world.

The building was Heritage Listed in 2000.
