Waverly Theatre

The Waverly Theatre was the smaller theatre located one block south of the bigger Boulevard Theatre. It was opened in 1909 and seated 692. The Waverly Theatre even though being the smaller theatre was a very popular theatre in the neighborhood. It was named after the comunity that it served.

It has gone through many conversions since it closed as a movie theatre in 1969. The last known is a shoe store. The entire neighborhood is going through some changes and it should be interesting to see what becomes of the old theatre.

Interestingly enough, the exterior of this theatre resembles that of the Waverly on 6th Avenue in NYC’s Greenwich Village.

Google Maps 2010 shows the Payless Shoe Store is still there. Given the size of the lobby portion of the building, I would not be surprised if the store is just in the lobby portion with the auditorium vacant, possibly being used for storage, but I can’t be sure. The store looks very well maintained.
