Du Midi

The Du Midi theatre opened on 7th April 1954 in a section of the bigger Apollohal. The cinema was located inside the glass façade in a soundproofed box with 784 seats and was equipped with CinemaScope and Stereophonic Sound. The box burned out in 1957 but the surrounding hall was spared, and rebuilding soon began, reducing the number of seats to 700 for more comfort. No other cinema in Amsterdam had as many 70mm hits as Du Midi, with “West Side Story” (93 weeks, a record for Amsterdam), “The Sound of Music” (39 weeks), “It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World” (34 weeks), “Funny Girl” (also 34 weeks)

On 1st December 1982 Du Midi closed its doors for good, at that time both 70mm projectors had been defective for some time and they were forced to run at 35mm again. “The Deer Hunter” was the last shown movie.
