Opening date of Salon Lumiere unknown? Salon Lumiere(Australia’s first cinema) screened Australia’s first short film “Passengers leaving the SS Brighton at Manly” on 27th October 1896(by Marius Sestier) on a 10 foot by 12 foot screen in a open space in Lewis Philips Auctioneers on the ground floor of a two storey building. The building also had a tailor, a shoe shop, a fancy goods store and a warehouse. Salon Lumiere was closed later in 1896.

It re-opened as Salon Cinematographe by James McMahon in(1896?). It was closed in March 1897. Possibly demolished? The site is now a souvenir and gift store store, money exchange store, a Virgin store, a phone store(Telstra), a shoe store(Skeckers), a bank(St George) on the ground floor and apartments above.
