AMC Porter Ranch 9

Things looked bright for the future of AMC on February 28, 2020, and to note the March 5 opening of the Porter Ranch 9, the Los Angeles Times published an article on Los Angeles area AMC Theatres, which began with the La Habra 4 in 1969.

In a Times interview John McDonald, Executive Vice President, U.S. Operations, related the future plans for AMC’s biggest market. In fact Mr. McDonald began his career at the AMC City Of Industry, California in 1975 as an usher and ticket taker.

The Porter Ranch 9, expecting to draw customers from the San Fernando Valley, was open from March 5 to 17, 2020, before temporarily closing because of Covid-19. So what is Porter Ranch’s claim to fame? Porter Ranch Park, was a filming location for the 1982 movie “E.T.“ and is two and a half miles away from the Porter Ranch 9.

The Porter Ranch 9 was AMC’s first new LA area theatre in a decade and at the time they had 35 locations and 470 screens in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino Counties. Future plans included Montclair, California and Westfield Topanga in Canoga Park to replace the Promenade 16 in Woodland Hills.

The Porter Ranch 9 was designed by Architects Orange.

I finally made it out to this theater after the opening was pushed from 2019 to 2020 and then to 2021. There are two bigger theaters (Dolby Cinema and Prime) and 7 smaller ones in this complex.

We went to see In The Heights in the Dolby theater. It was a bit smaller than I would have liked to see. The screen is about 45 ish feet wide and they use those half recliner seats that make your legs go numb after a while. However, the image and sound was just spectacular. None of the speakers were lit up like at other Dolby Cinemas, and the Atmos array was really loud and noticeable.

I peaked into the other theaters and it seems like the Prime Screen might be a bit larger. The other auditoriums are smaller, and have decent screens, although none with masking and all Common Width. I would still venture out to Burbank or Hollywood for ‘event’ films to see on much larger screens, but to have a Dolby Cinema out in the west valley is an improvement for this part of LA.

My Dolby doesn’t have lit up speaker either, just the sides, I think it is cause of the conversion of Prime to Dolby.

This the theater where they filmed the infamous Nicole kidman commercial about heartbreak feeling good in a movie theater.
