Grand Cinema

Situated in Penge, in South East London, it is not known when the Arc Electric Theatre opened, but it is listed in the 1923 Kinematograph Year Book (having not been included in the 1914 edition) with the address given only as Central Exchange (the name given to the buildings on this section of the High Street). The proprietor was Arc Electric Theatre Ltd. and the resident manager was B. Oken.

By the 1926 edition it had been renamed the Grand Cinema, and was operated by Miss O. J. Grey. By 1928 it was listed as being operated by B. Oken, who perhaps also remained as the manager, and H. Toye. By 1931 it was shown as being “Closed”, so clearly it was never wired for sound. (It was not listed in 1932.)

Since around 2017 the building has been home to Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries, a Nigerian Pentecostal church.
