The Star Picture Theatre was opened on 25th April 1910. The building was built in 1865 as an industrial school, which in 1899 became a mineral water factory. It was located upstairs on the first floor of a building which by 1909 housed a roller skating rink on the ground floor. It was so successful that in August 1910 it was closed for 2 to be expanded. In 1912, the roller skating rink had closed and the building was altered to extend the cinema into the whole building and a balcony was added, but the local council refused to allow the balcony seating area to be used. It wasn’t until January 1924 that the balcony was allowed to be opened up.

In 1930 it was equipped with a Western Electric(WE) sound system. It was sold to the Newcastle based Essoldo Cinemas circuit in 1948. They closed the Star Cinema on 7th January 1956. In 1960 a local car dealer applied to use the vacant building as a car auction house, but permission was refused. They did use it to store motor vehicles until 1964 when it was demolished. A petrol station was built on the site and by 1988 it was in use as a garden equipment hire facilitry.
