The Majestic Theatre was opened on 15th October 1941 with Don Ameche & Betty Grable in “Moon Over Miami”. It was designed by Chinese architect Robert Fan or Wenzhao Fan, who also designed the Nangking Cinema (later known as the Shanghai Concert Hall which has its own page on Cinema Treasures). Seating was located in orchestra and balcony levels. The cinema was operated by Asia Theatres/Shanghai Amusement Co. & Inc.

In 1989 it was listed as a Municipal Relic for Preservation. Around 2010 it was restored and renamed Shanghai Majestic Theatre.
