Ritz Cinema

Situated in the centre of Ashton-under-Lyne, in the Tameside district of Greater Manchester, the Queen’s Electric Theatre opened on 24th March 1913. It was designed by Manchester based architect Ernest Ogden.

It was owned by Alfred Jepson during the 1940’s, and substantially modernised in 1952. The main changes were internal, but a large, 24ft wide by 12ft high, ‘box’ was placed high on the frontage that proclaimed “The Ritz for Popular Entertainment”, and announced its new name. It reopened on 8th November 1952 as the Ritz Cinema with a Charity Performance of Larry Parks in “The Jolson Story”.

By the mid-1950’s the Ritz Cinema was owned by Pavilion (Ashton-under-Lyne) Ltd.

Unfortunately, the Ritz Cinema only lasted another few years, before closing on 9th March 1957 with “Istanbul”, starring Errol Flynn, & Donald O'Connor in “Francis in the Haunted House”.

The building became a tool shop, and was then home to Harbenware pan shop.

Much more recently, it is believed that it was demolished as part of the major redevelopment that has taken place in Ashton town centre.
