Vogue Cinema

Located in the Govan district to the West End of the city. The Vogue Cinema was opened on 4th July 1938 with Dick Powell in “Varsity Show”. It was designed for the George Singleton chain by architect James McKissack in a splendid Art Deco style. The gently curved façade was clad in cream faience tiles. The proscenium was 40ft wide. It was equipped with a Western Electric(WE) sound system.

It was closed on 30th December 1961 and the George Singleton Cinemas chain leased the cinema to an independent bingo club operator. They soon realised that bingo was a lucrative venture. The Singleton’s took the building back from the operators and it reopened as the Vogue Bingo Club which operated until closing in June 1985. A property developer had made a generous offer to the Singleton’s which was accepted, and the building was demolished to build flats on the site.
