Film Place

In the county town of Buckingham, the Chandos Cinema closed down back in the 1980’s (see separate Cinema Treasures entry).

As with many similar towns, in the absence of a replacement commercial cinema, the community rallied round and, in November 2005, The Film Place was founded. It is an independent, part-time community cinema operated by a not-for-profit charitable company, run by volunteers.

Films are usually screened twice a week, on Fridays and Saturdays, in the large lecture theatre at the University of Buckingham’s Chandos Road Building. The screen is 7.5m wide and there is a Surround Sound system.

A wide range of films is screened: mainstream, independent, foreign, classic and family films. Special events are held, such as Q&A sessions with filmmakers.

The Film Place is supported by Buckingham Town Council with an annual grant. Financial assistance has also been received from Aylesbury Vale District Council’s Community Chest.
