Royal Cinema

In Wigan, Lancashire, the Wallgate Cinema is thought to have opened around December 1912. It was owned by Fletcher Sansome, through his Wallgate Cinema Company.

The Wallgate Cinema was renamed the Royal Cinema in the 1920’s.

Into the ‘talkie’ era, a British Thomson Houston(BTH) sound system was installed.

By 1940 the Royal Cinema had been acquired by Merrill’s Enterprises Ltd, but it then moved to Kinematograph Sound & Engineering Ltd.

It is not known when the Royal Cinema closed, but the final entry in the Kinematograph Year Books is for 1945.

There appears to be no trace, nowadays, of the Royal Cinema. Wallgate runs alongside the famous Wigan Pier, and that area has seen considerable development over the years.
