The Liberty Theatre was the movie house in downtown Tobias, Nebraska. A boom town due to railroad traffic at the beginning of the 20th Century, the town got its first opera house. The Liberty Theatre appears to have begun life in the opera house before finding a new home in 1925.
The town suffered mightily during the Great Depression as the town’s population dwindled. But the Liberty Theatre soldiered on equipping with sound to stay relevant. The town’s population had gone from about 675 at the turn of the century to just over 300 at the beginning of the 1940’s. The Liberty Theatre couldn’t make it to the War years shuttering in 1941. In the 21st Century, the town had just 100 residents.
