The Del-Lu Theatre opened on February 28, 1927 with all 300 seats filled. D.B. Follet launched the venue replacing the Star Theatre that he had opened in downtown Gibsonburg in 1911. Follet would equip the theatre with Vitaphone sound possibly beginning with “Fast Life” on December 26, 1929 to remain viable.

Follet stayed with the Gibsonburg movie business from 39 years before selling out to George Wakely on November 1, 1950 who was also operating the Limelite Theatre in Woodville. The theatre was remodeled and reduced to 250 seats In 1953, the policy changed to Friday-Saturday English language and Spanish language on other days.

With little evidence to pinpoint its end of life, the theatre appears to have closed in June of 1955 with screenings moved to the new Skyway Drive-In and the Del-Lu Theatre may have not returned for further screenings that winter.

The “Lu” in Del-Lu is for Lulu Follet, daughter and ticket taker of the Del-Lu Theatre.
