They claim the Big Show is 66' x 28'.
I’ve been here a couple times now in the regular auditoriums. It’s nice to have a new theater with side-masked, scope screens and I hope they replicate that at the Crystal City location. The recliners here are also a bit wider and more comfortable than the ones at Woodbridge. Projection and sound have been top notch but the food service has been decidedly less so. The first time I was here they kept taking and delivering orders right up until the end of the movie, and then we had to wait about fifteen minutes after it ended for them to bring out the checks. The second time I got there a bit early and a manager came through and took my order, but the regular wait staff didn’t show up ‘til about five minutes before the movie started, and it took them a LONG time to get orders out. The checks were at least handled correctly this time. I’ve been to several Alamo locations now, all in VA or DC, and the food service has been hit or miss…so far it’s definitely a miss at this cinema.
I forgot to ask this while I was there, but any idea how tall the ‘The Big Show’ screen is ? anyone?
So I DID get a chance to see a movie on the ‘The Big Show’ screen last night, my film buddy called me up to see if I’d like to see the new Collin Farrell movie “After Yang” and I immediately obliged. It did not disappoint, while the movie itself was not Dolby Atmos, the 7.1 surround sound mix though was intricate and ethereal. I’m not sure how scope movies are presented on ‘The Big Show’ screen, since for ‘After Yang’ it was three AR’s: 4:3, 1.85, and 2.39
I have yet to see a movie on ‘The Big Show’ screen but I did get a peek of the auditorium prior to the complex opening. What’s great about the seats and tables, is that’s not a long table as in other Alamo setups, they are individual tables - if you’ve been to Showplace ICON and the ICON-X screens seating/tables, it’s like those, they swing forward and back.
I saw “The King’s Man” in aud 4 on 12-21-21. This was the 1st time I was ever in an Alamo. The place was great! Glamorous with a nice bar, super friendly staff, and all the public areas were decorated to the hilt with patterned wallpaper & carpet, sconces that resemble film reels. The auditorium had much leg room & comfort. Vintage film clips were the preshow. There were no trailers, though I am told usually there are. Food service in the auditorium was unobtrusive.
Seems like all screens are scope. Theatres 6 thru 9 are on the third floor. Theatres 1 thru 4 are on the lobby level. The Big Show screen is the only on the second level, and I uploaded a photo of the entrance to that screen, which is around twice the width as I paced it of the 70:seat screen 8. Screen 4 was a couple paces wider than Screen 8, and even the smallest screen looked more than adequate. No stadium seating to speak of, really. The back half has a little bit of a rise. The Big Show screen is so big that I felt I was a little close seeing a movie in wide screen sitting in the 6th of 8 rows, and I wouldn’t much want to be in the first three or four rows for scope or the front couple rows for anything. But it’s a wonderfully big screen; nothing can entirely replace the balcony of the Uptown but people in DC have a new huge screen to enjoy, and this is a welcome addition to the DC moviegoing experience. A server told me the private pre opening gala was a screening of Independence Day. If you are looking at the photo of the theatre on the home page, the Big Show screen is on the right side, the Alamo sign about where the top is, and the eight other screens are stacked four and four on the left side.
