The New Plymouth Theatre was reported in the Payette Valley Sentinel as opening November 20, 1936. The theatre was part of a circuit owned by Mentor Leigh who had theatres in Parma and Wilder, Idaho and Nyssa, Oregon. For the opening, local merchants sponsored a free Saturday afternoon show, “Charlie Chan’s Secret” with Warner Oland. In the evening, for 10 and 30 cents, was the attraction “In His Steps” with Eric Linden and Cecilia Parker.

According to local history, due to an overheated popcorn machine, the theatre burned July 11, 1946. In August 1946 Film Daily reported the loss at $22,00 and plans were in place to rebuild the theatre, which was listed in Film Daily Year Book 1949 with 350 seats.

The building’s current use is apartments, located across the street from the High School.
