The Spa Assembly Rooms was opened in May 1885 when a Dramatic Licence was granted. It was designed by architect Alfred Waterhouse of London. There were over 500-seats. By 1914 it was screening films. In 1919 it was taken over by the Thompson (Thos.) Circuit. It was closed around 1931 when it could no longer obtain silent films.
