Harrisonburg’s first modern theatre was built by Hall & Cox Construction for first-time theater operators Mr. and Mrs. Jack Knicely. The $60,000 Haydite block building the Fort Theatre launched in downtown on October 28, 1950 with Charles Starrett in “Trail of the Rustlers” supported by a Superman serial, a comedy short and a cartoon. It featured a balcony with 211 seats for African-American patrons.

The theatre may have discontinued films in 1956. However, it continued in 1962 as a live country music venue. Performers included Porter Waggoner.
