The Picture House

In Galston, East Ayrshire, The Picture House opened in 1912. According to the 1915 Bioscope Trade Directory, by that time it was being operated by Orbell Bros., with “Pictures only” and a seating capacity of 750.

The 1923 Kinematograph Year Book records that, by then, The Picture House had been acquired by Galston and District Pict. Ltd, and the resident manager was Fred Sharp.

By the 1928 edition, Mrs Margaret Gilroy was shown as the proprietor, with films being booked by John Reid Gilroy. By now, “Pictures and Variety” were being advertised.

By the 1932 edition, an RCA sound system had been installed. That edition also records the stage as being 12ft deep, there were two dressing rooms and shows were once nightly.

Into the 1940’s, Galston Picture House Co. is shown as the proprietor, and the seating capacity as 721.

After the ‘full’ entry in the 1961 Kinematograph Year Book the listings become very brief, which indicates closure sometime around 1961.

It is not known what the building was used for immediately after closure, but by the early 2000s it was a veterinary surgery. An application for demolition was submitted in 2006, and approved. Demolition took place around 2008.

Housing now occupies the site.
