Richard “Dick” S. Nolen opened Dick’s Theatre on February 1, 1913, in the Neathery building on the east side of the Haskell Square. He announced in the January 25, 1913, Haskell Free Press that his theatre would be moving pictures and vaudeville shows. The first shows in the theatre appear to have been vaudeville. In August of 1913, the show “The Texas Tattler” made its debut from the Alamo Film Company of San Antonio and “The Battle of Bull Run” in three reels. Dick Nolen operated the theatre until World War I began, and he closed the theatre for one year while he went to France to serve in the US Armed Forces. In 1918, Dick Nolen resumed management of Dick’s Theatre which reopened on December 2, 1918. The theatre continued to show films and vaudeville until it closed permanently at the end of 1921. With difficulties with his health, Richard “Dick” Nolen quit the theatre business and went to work as a film salesman for Metro Film Corporation of Kansas City.
