Old Corn Exchange Picture Palace

Located in Rochester, Kent. The Corn Exchange was built in 1706. From 10th October 1910 it was opened as the first cinema to operate in the town. It was operated by The Royal Canadian Picture Co. and the first film screened was a maritime drama “Stars and Stripes”. The seats were covered in red velvet and leather. By 1914 it was operated by J.F. Raymond. It was closed as a cinema in 1924 (reasons unknown) but the town was left without a cinema until April 1935 when the 2,181-seat Majestic Cinema opened (it has its own page on Cinema Treasures as the Odeon Rochester).

The Corn Exchange was remodeled internally in 1961 and is in use as a general purpose hall for special events and weddings. It is a Grade I Listed building.
