Southtown Cinemas I & II - Dayton, OH

Opened on July 18, 1975 with Gene Hackman in “Bite the Bullet” and Paul Newman in “The Drowning Pool”. It was operated by Chakeres Theaters Inc. and the Southtown Cinemas I & II were inside the old Elder Beerman’s Department Store next to the Dayton Mall in the South Towne Shopping Center. Southtown Cinemas I & II was the first area cinema to be wheel chair accessible. Each auditorium had 700 seats.

Chakeres Theaters Inc. sold the Southtown Cinemas I & II in 1988 to National Amusements. National Amusements switched to a second run format and closed Southtown Cinemas I & II April 1st, 1990 with “Look Who’s Talking” and “War of the Roses”.

Jim Howard managed this theater in the late 70’s.
Holding a crowd for the next show then getting them in their seats took less than fifteen minutes when the ropes went down, thanks to the long hallway that stretched from the lobby to the parking lot way out front.
Some good memories. Still have the original “Magic” one sheet from 1978 and “Maximum Overdrive” from 1986.

I worked at Southtown from ‘82-84 under Jim Howard. Best boss I ever had! We showed ET for almost a year in theater 1, And we even had “Jesus” stop by one afternoon. good times a good memories.

Hello JeffR, We certainly do know each other. I’m the one who Mr. Howard referred to as “that kid from Kettering”. I still have the “Magic” one-sheet and Lobby Card you gave me, but he thinks (thought) I ‘appropriated’. I hope all is well with you. Bowman78 (formerly southernlandthief)
