Hastings 4

The 428-seat Strand Theatre was opened by 1926. This theatre is a great small theatre if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the large theatres and enjoy a good movie. They even have a football table and good popcorn. The staff is really nice too. If you attend a late showing on Friday or Saturday nights or go to one of the daily matinee you might even get the theatre all to yourself. It was closed on March 16, 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Goodrich Quality Theaters went under and the Hastings 4 was taken over by GQT Movies.

My father, Gordon Bennett, owned and operated this theater in the early 1960’s – 1ate 1970’s. I have several newspaper clippings of his controversial views, often expressed via his business. He tried converting this one screen theater into a dinner theater renaming it “Ye Old Stand Theater” The Grand Rapids Press did a feature story on the whole operation.

FDYB listings for a Hastings Theatres start appearing in the mid-50s. If this theatre was earlier known as the Strand, I’ve found a listing for that as early as 1930.

Water Winter Wonderland link about the Strand/Hastings 4 with photos. I added a page for the Barry Theatre mentioned in a 1949 flyer.

The Strand Theatre in Hastings was mentioned in the October 14, 1922 issue of Exhibitors Herald. Hastings also had a house called the Regent Theatre during this period. The June 19, 1926 issue of the Herald mentioned the Strand and Family Theatres in Hastings. The only theater listed at Hastings in the 1914-1915 American Motion Picture Directory was called the Star, also located on W. State Street.

Hastings 4 closed March 16, 2020 along with all of the Goodrich Theatre Circuit’s portfolio due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Goodrich then declared bankruptcy ceasing operations.

The theatre reopened under new management of GQT Movies Circuit on October 23, 2020 as GQT Hastings 4. (Mason Asset Management and Namdar Realty Group purchased the bankrupt circuit with partner VIP Cinemas taking over operation of 22 former Goodrich Quality Theatre locations including the Oxford location. GQT Movies' home office is located in Kentwood, Michigan.) The theatre closed again less than a month later for COVID-19 on November 18, 2020 and reopened December 25, 2020. This entry should be listed as Formerly Operated by Goodrich Quality Theaters and Operated by GQT Movies.
