Mystic Theatre

The Mystic Theater is a rare example of a timber-framed movie theatre. It is said the be the oldest movie theatre in North Dakota. It opened on April 22, 1914 seating 187.

There are many festivals held each year at the Mystic Theatre such as the Dinosaur Days, in July, Cowboy Poetry days in September amd Santa Claus Day in December. These special events along with the regular movie fare keeps this beautiful old gem going.

The Mystic Theatre went through a complete renovation in 1999. The theatre is now owned and operated by the Marmarth Historical Society. It was listed on the National Registry of Historical Places as of 1977.

“It is a 26-by-76-foot (7.9 m × 23.2 m) frame building, stuccoed, with 187 seats. It was unusual for its time, as it was specifically designed for showing "motion pictures”. It was a project of professional baseball player Guy Johnson (1891-1971), who moved to Marmarth and built the theatre in 1914. It opened April 22, 1914 and was packed."
