Following purchase of the ‘Morning Post-Herald’ and Commonwealth Migration Bureau office buildings in May 1928, Union Theatres set a notional date of 1st January 1929 to open the largest theater in the Southern Hemisphere. By 11th June demolitions had been completed and excavations started, to dig 16 feet below the level of Finders and 40 feet below Russell Street. This colorized photo was taken 30th August 1928.
