The Showplace 6 was opened November 26, 1980. I worked at this theatre first as a projectionist in 1992. Then it was a first run theatre. After that if I remember right around January 1993 or Febuary 1993 we went started to play half second run prints on three screens and first run prints on the other three screens. And finally we converted a little time after that to a complete second run theatre.
At one point we even hosted a TV production crew who was in Austin filming a spot for the TV show “Rescue 911” in which during a woman who was watching a movie at the Arbor 7 Theatre had a heart attack. You see when the producers wanted to film it at the Arbor (Act3 Theatres owned it at the time) did not want them there so they came to us instead. I remember cause I was an assistant manager there and I had to be there at 6am for two straight days to open the theatre for them. In addition to opening the theatre for our customers at 12:45pm both days. Unfortunately William Shattner did not come to the shoot but my managers wife did get a signed picture of him in the mail a couple of weeks later. I left the theatre in 1995 and I think it was open until around 1998 or 1997.
As of 2002 the building had been purchased by the Round Rock ISD around I was told in 2000 with plans to convert it into additional class space for Westwood High School but I have since been told that Round Rock ISD has given up on that idea when they found out how much it would cost to fill in the slanted concret floors in the theatres.
Concession stand has been ripped out and all the seats and equipment was removed at the time of the closing. The front and side signs were still there but in bad shape. The theatre’s parking lot has been repaved and is beeing used for extra parking for the students of Westwood high school. The building stood empty for many years, and was not up for sale. Also in 1990 before it was remodled the theatre had only one speaker behind each screen, with no surrounds at all. The after the remodel it has all new screens, seats, carpet and it still had only one speaker behind the new screens but now surround speakers were added to screens 1 and 6 only.
