The Plaza Twin was located in the Hillcrest Plaza Shopping Center on W. Overland Road and S. Orchard Street.
It opened on March 5, 1969 with seating for 596 & 333. The opening movies were Gregory Peck in “The Stalking Moon” & Tony Randall in “Hello Down There”. It was equipped to screen 35mm, 70mm and Cinerama films. It operated as a discount cinema for a time after the big multi-plex was open and then closed in the mid-1990’s. The building has since been converted into retail space.

The “retail space” in question was a HonK’s $1.00 (capitalization accurate) store which occupied the former lobby. As of a couple years ago, the seating still existed behind the retail store area. This was confirmed by a HonK’s employee when I asked where the old theater was located within the complex.
The Hillcrest Shopping Center opened theater-less in 1963 with anchors Woolworth’s and Grand Central department store. In 1969, expansion brought about the Plaza Twin cinema. The theatre played “Star Wars” to enthusiastic crowds. Two decades after closing, the Plaza Twin was still fully intact although locked up.
The Plaza twin opened on March 5th, 1969. Grand opening ad posted.
