Producer seeks help on History Channel series

posted by Patrick Crowley on December 22, 2005 at 9:39 am

I am working on a 12-hour series for The History Channel titled “Mega Movers” which looks at extraordinary moves taking place around the world. I am currently looking for moves taking place between now and February 2006 to profile on the show. Specifically, I would like to document the move of a theatre – are you aware of any that have been moved or are to be moved in the next few months? If so, I would like to hear more about the move and when it is scheduled to begin.

Additionally, I am looking for historic, very large, iconic or just unusual structures moving before Feb 2006 and welcome your suggestions. Please feel free to pass my contact information along to anyone else who may know about other upcoming moves.
Thank you.

The only theatre that I know of theat was moved from it’s original site was The Empire Theatre in NYC. It was moved up the block from next door to the Liberty Theatre to being near the corner of 42nd Street and 8th Avenue. It is the entrance and lobby area of the AMC Empire 25 Theatre today.

This Cinema Treasure site has some information (links.) to the Academy Theatre in Minneapolis- it was moved several years ago and was the heaviest building ever moved on rubber tires

The Copley Theatre in Boston was cut up, turned 90 degrees, and put back together in 1922. However, it no longer exists, having been torn down in the early 1960s to make way for a toll road.

The move of the Academy aka Schubert theatre in Minneapolis has already been documented on one of the cable channels (Discovery or History). The same program also had a segment on the move of the Cape Hatteras lighthouse.
