8th Avenue Theatre?

posted by Greenpoint on December 23, 2005 at 7:07 am

NEW YORK, NY — What theatre was located on 8th Avenue between West 50th and West 51 streets? I remember they demolished this theatre when they erected the Longacre Apartments. This was sometime in the late 90’s.

It was one block over from the old Madison Square Garden, which was demolished in the late ‘60’s / early 70’s and became the Worldwide Plaza and home to the Cineplex Odeon Worldwide Cinemas (now the Dodger Stages).

I recall the entrance as being on Eighth Avenue closer to West 50th Street. Please help me figure this out, its been on my mind.

Thanks,
Greenpoint

Was this the old Adonis Theater porn house? It was formerly the Tivoli and is listed here on this site.

It was the Tivoli, with a beautiful “open air” theatre on the roor.

I believe it WAS the Adonis, because when I was younger, and lived in Manhattan, I used to catch the bus to go uptown, right across the street. There was/is an antique lighting store next to where the theatre was. I have not been in that area lately so I do not know off hand what is there now. Maybe it WAS the Tivoli, as they were both located close to each other.

Warren — we post lots of stories that aren’t specifically “news”.

In this example, posting this question to Cinema Treasures is a great way to get everyone involved… and, not surprisingly, it looks the community has identified this theater!

Greenpoint… I’m glad you’re posting queries like this using the “Help Wanted” news topic. I always thought this site needed a forum to identify “mystery theaters” and such and I never thought about posting them here as you did. Makes perfect sense to me.

Thank you EdSolero,
My thought processes warranted me to actually rationalize that a question would fall into the auspices of Help Wanted. As I did want help getting a particular question answered.Once again the CT forum, came through flying colors.

Sincerely,
Greenpoint

Very well could have been the Hollywood Twin,a revival theater that lasted a few years from the early to late eighties.

Hi Theatrerat,
I known exactly where the Hollywood Twin was. They were located on
Eighth Avenue in the mid to late forties.I believe the bulding is used by some tour bus company.

Hollywood Twin is listed here:
/theaters/4697/
