Help!

I’m a masters student in urban planning and we are doing a project or rennovation in urban environments.

I would like to renovate an old theater into a either a jazz club type setting or another musical-type use.

Does anyone know of any projects or have any ideas for a transformation?

Thanks for your help.

Check out the Ioka Theater in Exeter NH. There is a link to the Ioka Club from the listing in Cinema Treasures. Roger Detzler is President of IOKA Entertainment Inc.

Excellant project Jake, wish you must success with your project. Check out the Old Town project in Wichita, Kansas. Bill Warren opened a five screen theatre next to a night club in this downtown project and is quite successful. This may be a little different than what you have described in your question, but the concept in an urban enviorment is quite similar.

The UC Theatre in Berkeley might work. Great old theater sitting empty near UC campus.

I found http://www.fabricspraypaint.com useful for my project. Of course i left most of the seats intact. Paint works very well on seats, curtains, and wall panels.

If you’re looking for a challenge, come to Detroit. We’ve got about five abandoned theaters, beautiful buildings, sitting vacant waiting to be demolished. Detroit needs some jazz clubs anyhow. There’s nothing to do here!
