Theater seat totals: Which trade book lists them?

posted by ArchStanton007 on January 5, 2007 at 12:30 pm

Looked at past editions of Film Daily Yearbook in the Fort Lee, NJ library and didn’t see the seat totals listed for individual theaters nationwide which I had thought they published. But they do list each theater chain and theaters by state.

Or maybe, were they listed in the International Motion Picture Almanac? I am looking for several theater seat totals from the early 1970’s which are not listed on this site.

Which books should I check please?

Thank You Much.

P.S.—Will send a few bucks to anybody that can fax, scan-email, or US Mail me individual seat counts for Westchester, Bergen and Hudson Counties prior to 1975.

Thank You Much.

Later editions of Film Daily Yearbooks (late 1960’s onwards) lacked the information that was included in earlier editions. If you look in editions of F.D.Y. pre-1955 you will find seating capacities given (plus in some editions the full addresses for theatres in major towns and cities).

However, you say you are looking for seating capacities for the 1970’s (presumably for newly built theatres at the time?). Your best bet would be to search records in local town/city council’s planning departments & licencing departments

Take those books with a grain of salt. Many times they had wrong information in them whether it be seating capacities, name of owner, number of screens, etc. I have found MANY mistakes over the years in Motion Picture Almanac, etc.
