Questions on United Artists theatre?

DARIEN, CT — Was curious if anybody has information on the United Artists Theatre. Noticed it listed in the UA Westchester County listings as eastern Connecticut’s exclusive run of “Airport” in May of 1970. Unusual, as Stamford theaters usually did the exclusive area engagements in Fairfield County back then.

Was it a 1960’s shopping center theater or an older house from way back?

Thank You Much.

Well as of 1969 UA Theatre’s had three single houses operating (Groton, Cinema East and Trumbull).

Groton: UA Groton Theatre was built around 1967 and seated 700 people. This theatre was a D-150 house (70MM/35mm).

Manchester: UA Cinema East single house, later added 2 more screens in the early 80’s.

Trumbull: UA Trumbull Theatre was built late 1965 and seated 958 people. This theatre was a D-150 house (70MM/35mm).

They were theatres built around shopping centers.

It is still open as the Darien Playhouse. You can access its Cinema Treasures page at /theaters/438/ and view photos of it at http://www.cinematour.com/tour/us/2845.html
